Written by Kalki Krishnamurthy, the book’s screen adaptation was attempted by many including MG Ramachandran and Kamal Hasan, but never took off.
The story of great king Raja Raja Chola, would be nothing short of a magnum opus. An ambitious project, the filmmaker is trying to rope in Aishwarya Rai to play Nandhini who is apparently one of the most deadliest characters in the book. The other actors shortlisted are Vikram, and Mohan Babu. According to sources, Mani Ratnam is well aware of the monies required to recreate the Chola Empire and the shoot budgets for the same.
Aishwarya Rai made her film debut in Mani Ratnam’s Iruvar and later collaborated with him on Guru and Raavan, which also starred husband Abhishek Bachchan.
