Ajay Devgn To Play Team India’s Unsung Football Coach In This Upcoming Film

It’s raining inspirational films in Bollywood, and ‘Maidaan’ is another one of them! The film, based on the life of India’s football coach Syed Abdul Rahim was announced in July 2018, and now a year later, the film has finally gone on floors. Ajay Devgn shared the announcement on his Twitter handle, saying the shooting for ‘Maidaan’ has kicked off.

The film is based on the period 1952-1962, which, according to the film’s poster is the Golden Era of Indian Football. Ajay Devgn will be playing Indian football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, who team to new heights and yet remains an unsung hero in the Indian history of sports. The team, under his leadership, won the gold medal in the Asian Games in 1951 and 1962. They had also managed to secure a place in the semifinals in the 1956 edition of the games.

The cast and crew will be filming in three locations – Jakarta in Indonesia, Rome in Italy, and Melbourne in Australia. Boney Kapoor, who is producing the film, had said in an earlier statement, “With Ajay Devgn on board, I can just hope that our film inspires youngsters to play football, and India soon to bring the World Cup home.” The film will also star, alongside Devgn, south Indian actress Keerthy Suresh. Maidaan is being directed by Amit Sharma, whose last film Badhaai Ho went on to win a National Award.

Maidaan will hit screens in 2020.
