Deepika Padukone Responds To Salman Khan Calling ‘Depression’ A ‘Luxury’

Depression isn’t an easy battle to fight and overcome, but Deepika Padukone has been there and done that. In a recent interview to Vogue, she cleared the air about the illness and also took a dig at Salman Khan for his flippant comments on depression. “People confuse it with being a bit sad. A male star said recently that he didn’t have the luxury to be depressed. As if depression is a choice!” said Deepika Padukone.

Though she did not overtly take Salman Khan’s name, the comment that she appears to be referring to is the one that is attributed to a 2018 interview that the actor gave to IANS. He was quoted saying that being depressed is a ‘luxury’ that he can’t afford.

I see a lot of people going on vacations, but I cannot afford that luxury of taking a vacation. I see a lot of people getting depressed and emotional, but I can’t afford that luxury of being depressed or sad or emotional because no matter what I am going through, it works against me.

Deepika has campaigned extensively to make people aware about depression and mental illnesses. Sharing her experience on the personal front, she has reiterated several times about the fact that depression is never meant to be a choice. She spoke about the same in the interview to Vogue

The word that best describes my experience of depression is struggle. Every second was a struggle. I felt exhausted the whole time.
