Sidharth Malhotra will be seen stepping into the shoes of Indian Army Captain Vikram Batra, the legendary ‘sher shaah’ of Kargil.
Sidharth Malhotra said in an interview that this is the “toughest role” of his life and no amount of training can prepare him to play such a character.
Caught in a conversation with GoodTimes, Sidharth Malhotra shares how he feels about playing Vikram Batra in his forthcoming release. He says, “It’s emotional, it’s a lot of responsibility I feel. It’s a story that I hope people see, his life story, his sacrifices he made. I just hope we do justice to his story. It’s a lot to live up to.”
On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army recaptured all the Indian posts in Kargil that had been occupied by the Pakistan Army. The unparalleled courage of the young army officers and jawaans still etched in the collective memory of the country.
Directed by Vishnu Vardhan, Sidharth Malhotra’s ‘Shershaah’ will narrate the inspiring story of one such hero who was martyred in the battle. Vikram Batra was often referred as ‘sher shaah’ in the intercepted messages by the Pakistani Army. Soon after capturing Tiger Hill with his soldiers on 20th June 1999, Captain Batra had announced his victory from the hill saying ‘yeh dil maange more’.
In the 2003 Hindi movie, ‘LOC Kargil’, based on the entire Kargil war, it was Abhishek Bachchan who played the role of Captain Vikram Batra.
Captain Vikram Batra was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honour on August 15, 1999, the 52nd anniversary of India’s independence.
Sidharth Malhotra will be seen in a a double role, where he will portray both Vikram Batra and his twin, Vishal Batra.
“This is my first biopic and I am super excited for it. He has a brother but the film is predominately about Captain Vikram. We are planning how to cleverly deal with it (double roles). He impacted so many people in the Army. I won’t say he is a personality that everybody knows but I felt it was a story that needed to be told. I found his story fascinating,” the actor had said.
Sidharth Malhotra shared a picture while shooting for Shershaah in Kargil, the actor wrote “Close to heaven, down to Earth! #MountainBoy”.
Shershaah also stars actor Kiara Advani and is slated to release in the year 2020.
