Hrithik-Kangana To Nepotism: The 10 Big ‘Filmy’ Controversies Of The Decade

All is well between Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, and Deepika Padukone but do you Bollywood buffs remember the infamous interview of the two ladies when they took a dig at their alleged ex-boyfriend? Here are many such moments of massive controversy that stirred the air in the past decade.

The Hrithik Roshan and Kangana Ranaut fall out

Hrithik and Kangana worked together in Kites and later in Krrish 3. The rumours of their affair started doing the rounds after Krrish 3. Alleged exes Hrithik Roshan and Kangana Rananut made headlines for washing dirty linen in public. The two slapped each other with legal notices back in 2016, when there was speculation that Hrithik had ousted Kangana from Aashiqui 2. Addressing which, Kangana Ranaut had said in an interview, “Yes, many lame rumours are doing rounds, even a dumb ass can tell where these rumours are coming from. I don’t know why exes do silly things to get your attention. For me that chapter is over and I don’t dig graves.”

Reacting to the issue, Hrithik Roshan tweeted about how he would rather date the Pope than any of ‘the women the media has been naming’. The actor sent the first legal notice, demanding an apology from Kangana Rananut for defaming him.

Kangana Ranaut then reverted in a 21-page reply on March 1, she said in a notice, “She is not some dim-witted teenager who has been smitten and that whatever happened between the two of them was with full consent of both parties.” And then came a lot many accusations, a lot of back and forth that left their fans shocked.

The Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif break up

Having started their love affair first on the sets of Ajab Prem ki Gazab Kahaani, the couple took things to the point of moving in together. However, the couple soon entered a rough patch in their lives.

The insecurities that Katrina Kaif had in the relationship were far more than evident. Her GQ interview is testimony of that. She had said, “My greatest fear is that if and when I get married and I am standing at the altar or the mandap, he may not love me completely. That he may not know his mind well enough to be making those commitments. The anticipation of heartbreak is my only fear.”

While Ranbirs Kapoor’s ex-girlfriend Deepika Padukone had nothing to do with the break-up, Katrina Kaif seemed unhappy that the exes were working together. She was quoted saying, “I can’t enforce my will on the people in my life. Their choices are their own. I may not be happy with them but I hope that as they mature or as they evolve, their choices will change!”

During her interview with GQ, Katrina sounded unhappy about not being close to Ranbir Kapoor’s parents. She said, “I am not as close to Ranbir’s family as I would like. But I would like to hang out with them more. Family would be a defining factor when I make the decision to marry. I am a very responsive person. So, if my partner gives me what I need, I can be the best girlfriend you can wish for.” Evidently, his mother Neetu Kapoor was unhappy with Ranbir Kapoor moving in with Katrina. At the Kapoor’s Christmas brunch when Katrina Kaif accompanied him, Neetu Kapoor decided to skip the party altogether.

Katrina’s GQ interview again revealed that she feared of being cheated on. The actor stated, “See men and women, they’re different. Women give birth to babies, men don’t. We can’t say ‘oh equality on all levels, we’re all the same. No, our biological needs and bodies are different. Men have been the hunters and the philanderers. Being with an actor has its own set of issues, but the basic differences arise because men are men. Cheaters will cheat anywhere,” she added. Ranbir Kapoor then moved out of their apartment. He was seen leaving the house with all his belongings.

The Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone clapback

Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone made headlines with their Koffee With Karan episode, where they made an unforgettable remark on ex Ranbir Kapoor. Yes, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone both once dated the actor. On the show, the ladies took multiple digs at the actor claiming that he isn’t a good boyfriend and hinting that he is unfaithful in his relationships.

Karan Johar asked Sonam Kapoor what her take was on Deepika Padukone’s relationship with Ranbir Kapoor, she said “Ranbir is a great friend but I don’t know if he’s a great boyfriend. I have known Ranbir all my life and as a boyfriend, I don’t know, I mean, she did a great job hanging onto him for so long.” To which Deepika Padukone replied, “Thank you!” Deepika Padukone went on to add that Ranbir Kapoor is a great person and an excellent friend to have but he needs to work on his boyfriend skills.

Leaving it all in the past, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone worked together in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor also shared screen-space in Sanju, the biopic of Sanjay Dutt.

The AIB roast that toasted many

The comedy roast show featuring filmmaker Karan Johar as roastmaster and Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor as the guests came under serious scrutiny. The Maharashtra Government issued an enquiry, “Our demand is for an FIR against the organisers, directors, producers and actors for obscenity,” said Akhilesh Tiwari, president of Brahman Ekta Seva Santha. “The youth gets inspired by the actors and usage of such filthy language is shocking. This is an attack on the Indian culture.”

“If the AIB Roast was vulgar and has violated the law, we will take action,” Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said. Many celebrities then came out in support of AIB following the retraction.

The Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra jabs

Karan Johar’s “Koffee with Karan” couch has been the witness to a lot. This one involved Kareena Kapoor taking a jibe at Priyanka Chopra’s accent to which Priyanka Chopra, who was later seen on the show, had replied that she got it from the same place Saif got his from.

The Kapil Sharma Show fallout

Ever since Sunil Grover had a fallout with Kapil Sharma in 2017, everyone has been waiting for them to reunite. It all happened when the grapevine was abuzz that Kapil Sharma misbehaved with Sunil Grover on a flight when the former was in a drunken state.

The Shah Rukh Khan and Shirish Kunder fight

Remember when Shah Rukh Khan allegedly came to blows with director Farah Khan’s husband Shirish Kunder at Sanjay Dutt’s party at a nightclub in Juhu? Back in 2012, reportedly, after being stalked by Shirish Kunder through the party, Shah Rukh Khan as he was about to leave, lost his temper and pinned him onto a sofa and slapped him.

An eyewitness present at the party was quoted saying, “Shirish Kunder kept hovering around Shah Rukh and followed him onto the dance floor, but the actor simply ignored him.” Things between the two men weren’t great after Shirish Kunder had posted an insulting remark on a website that read, ‘I just heard a Rs 150-crore firework fizzle’, critising Ra.One.

“Khan refused to acknowledge Kunder at the party. Even when Dutt escorted SRK outside the venue to introduce him to a close friend, Kunder unabashedly followed them,” said another eyewitness. “Kunder placed himself right behind SRK and murmured something into his ear.” It was the proverbial straw that broke the camel, or in this case, Khan’s back. “An annoyed SRK, who was actually preparing to leave the party, turned around, held Kunder by the scruff of the neck, and forced him to sit on a sofa near the nightclub’s exit,” said a guest.

The Karan Johar ‘cocaine’ party

Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa had a serious accusation that several Bollywood celebrities “flaunted their drugged state” at a party held at Karan Johar’s home. The filmmaker however dismissed all the allegations, but a debate soon sparked between politicians on the internet. MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa wrote a long open letter, slamming the celebrities.

He questioned why there were no food or drink glasses at the bash. “If it wasn’t a powder-impacted state, why did you all appear stoned and shamelessly out of your senses? Does your dislike for drugs and narcotic substances limited to on-screen presence and just to defame a state for some cheap publicity (and hefty money)? Is there any passion within when you associate with a cause or all the campaigning is a part “Drama” done to please some group or agenda-setters?”

Jiah Khan and Sooraj Pancholi

Jiah Khan, at just 25, was found dead in her family’s apartment, controversy rose around one question – whether it was suicide or murder owing to a war between Bollywood’s leading families.

Jiah Khan had been dating actor Aditya Pancholi’s son, Sooraj, and was found hanging in her Juhu apartment on June 3, 2013. Rabia Khan, Jiah Khan’s mother had repeatedly said 25-year-old Jiah could not have committed suicide, and filed a petition for a thorough probe in the High Court, which had then asked the CBI to follow the case.

The nepotism debate by Karan Johar

Karan Johar was labelled the ‘flagbearer of nepotism’ by Kangana Ranaut back in 2017 on his own chat show and the discussion has never stopped since. Karan Johar and Kangana Ranaut frequently made headlines for taking digs at each other. In the same year, Karan Johar, along with actor Saif Ali Khan and Varun Dhawan were at the receiving end of severe backlash after chanting “nepotism rocks” at the IIFA Awards.

Star kids such as Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Sara Ali Khan and Ananya Panday to name a few, have added their part to the debate by saying that they had an easy start, that’s undeniable, but the journey after that was difficult. Outsiders such as Taapsee Pannu, Bhumi Pednekar, Ayushmann Khurrana have a bag of mixed emotions on the topic.
