The John Abraham-starrer’s subject will revolve around an iconic football match set in the 1911, in the time of undivided India. The match was played against the regiment of East Yorkshire, by a team which played completely barefoot. This iconic victory was more than just a note in the history of time, it spurred a Nationalist movement which ultimately led to India’s freedom from the British in 1947. The John Abraham starrer will have Nikkhil Advani at the directorial helm, yet again. Though the film was announced in November 2018, it will go on floors by end of 2020. This is the director-actor duo’s second collaboration, after the success of their recent release Batla House. Director Nikkhil Advani said in a statement –

I am committed to 1911, that is something I am going to start writing. I am making it with John (Abraham) next year. It will end by end of next year. 1911 is based on the football match between Mohun Bagan and (East) Yorkshire Regiment. It is one event that ignited the freedom movement in India. It is a script that John and his team have been working on for the last five years.

1911 was originally supposed to be directed by Shoojit Sircar, but later, the directorial baton passed on to Nikkhil Advani.

I believe Soojith (Sircar) was supposed to direct it and then it didn’t work out between him and John. So, I love the idea, I love the period, it is again nationalistic, patriotic. It was a period when eleven men did not realise how they were energising an entire country to take up a kind of movement which led to freedom of India in 1947.
