‘Industry Waale Jaye Tel Lene’ & More – Kangana Launches Film Trailer With Scathing Remarks

An actress who is known to never mince her words, Kangana Ranaut is definitely feisty every time she interacts with the media! At a recent press event for the trailer launch of her upcoming film, ‘Judgemental Hai Kya’, she spoke about how her character in the film, ‘Bobby’, was written keeping her in mind and she doesn’t know if that is an insult or a compliment!

Kangana Ranaut said that she was initially prejudiced against the idea of doing a thriller, but when she heard the script, she was completely blown away. Thriller is just one layer of the film, as Kangana said, the film has so much more to offer.

When I read it, I felt so stupid for being prejudiced against a thriller. I always felt that thriller is a technician’s medium, a director’s medium and actors have really no arc because you have to be ambiguous. I was so wrong and I’m so happy I finally did it! The role was written keeping me in mind – I don’t know whether it is an honour or a humiliation.

Ranaut has constantly been badgered by fraternity members, who often claim that she is on medication and is mentally unfit. Is this why she relates to her character in Judgemental Hai Kya? Ranaut clarified –

People claimed that I was on medication, which I am not. But even if I was, it would be nothing to feel ashamed of. I feel that the phase of 2016-2017 in my life helped me relate to the story, if I hadn’t gone through that phase I probably wouldn’t have appreciated the story as much. She is a little ‘offbeat’, everyone calls her mad. I don’t think it’s a compliment and I don’t think it’s a humiliation either.

So is Judgemental Hai Kya meant to bring about awareness around mental illnesses? Kangana Ranaut says that’s not the intention, as the film is not meant to be one which will offer a solution to the problems that mental health patients face. Furthermore, Bobby, who is Kangana Ranaut’s character in the film is not the regular chirpy, happy film heroine that one would expect her to be.

A regular film heroine is the one who is the most popular girl in college, everyone wants to marry her – but this is not the case with the character in Judgemental Hai Kya. She is suffering from a condition, she is taking medication. However, it’s not her sob story, and she doesn’t kill herself in the end or anyone else.

This is not unlike characters that Kangana Ranaut has undertaken in the past, as she spoke about Tanu from Tanu Weds Manu and compares her to Bobby from Judgemental Hai Kya.

There was a revolution that my character Tanu brought about. She wasn’t a vamp, she is going around with boys and she’s pretty good at it! A mainstream actress for the first time was seen portraying such a role on screen. So similarly, Bobby, my character in the film, isn’t hanging herself. She isn’t sitting in a corner and sobbing about it. She is doing her business, doing her job, trying to see the silver lining – which is a great thing! She makes fun of herself, of the situation that she is in.

Kangana Ranaut was asked how she felt about the film’s title being changed from Mental Hai Kya to Judgemental Hai Kya, to which she responded by saying, “Jab koi bhi cheez kangana ranaut ki hoti hai toh bahut se logon ko bahut jagah problem hoti hai.”

The actress spoke about how Salman’s film Kick is called Mental in its South title, but nobody raised an objection to that. She further elaborated about the Censor Board being supportive of the film, yet the Psychiatry Association insisting on the word ‘mental’ being removed from the film’s title as they claimed that it had been banned.

We were being called for hearings after hearings, in fact the Censor Board supported us a lot. The Psychiatry Association wanted to take us to court to prove that the word has been banned. So we didn’t have much choice. But we truly believe that the sincerity with which we’ve made the product clearly shows. We’ve obtained a U/A certificate, the board panel was very happy with our film and they found nothing controversial in it and with a heavy heart asked them to change the title. We have complete faith in our intentions, and a small title change won’t make a difference.

Kangana Ranaut has been at the receiving end of a lot of criticism and flak from her colleagues and industry insiders. But according to her, it is her work that matters; and if her work is getting the appreciation from people then she doesn’t care about the rest of the industry. Ranaut was quoted as saying-

I am appreciated by people on so many levels- some like my work, and don’t like my personality. Others who haven’t even seen my films love my personality! I get appreciation from people, industry waale gaye tel lene. I am humbled.
