Rajkummar Rao has played integral roles in many of his films; although his roles aren’t always the lead, but they become vital to the telling of the story. Does Rajkummar Rao aspire to play the lead in his upcoming films? He says not, as he is sorted on that front mentally. It is not his ambition to consciously strive for such roles, as he revealed.
I’m pretty sorted that way, like I’m doing Judgemental Hai Kya. Then there’s Roohi Afza happening right now. I’m not really looking to do solo films where I’m the only guy. I’m not looking to do ‘traps’ only throughout my life.
He laughingly made a subtle reference to his own earlier film Trapped. So what does Rajkummar Rao look for when choosing a film? Does it matter to him that other actors have more screen presence than him?
The story is important and other actors have to be present. If the story excites me, it’s not important who all are going to be in the film and how much screen time they will have in the film. I think that’s it, the story is there and I want to be a part of it. And then it’s done. Then it’s just about my honesty and my character.

Rajkummar Rao’s films have faced several title changes, from Mental Hai Kya to Judgemental Hai Kya. Even his next horror comedy Rooh Afza was changed to Roohi Afza. Rajkummar Rao spoke about the same, saying that there is definitely something around his films and their titles that they keep on changing! Further, he talked about his upcoming film Roohi Afza.
I think there’s something with me and my titles, they keep changing. It’s a horror comedy again, but very different from Stree. It’s way more bizarre than Stree. That’s the fun part of horror comedy. It can’t be in the real world, you know, you can’t really mess up with a ghost if they happen to be there. But it’s fun!
Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao will be working together for the first time in Roohi Afza. The horror comedy will be Janhvi’s second on-screen outing. For someone who is so new in the industry, Rajkummar Rao sure has a lot to say about her skill as an actor! Said Rao about Janhvi-
You’ll be very happily surprised to see Janhvi in Roohi Afza. She’s very good.

Talking about his upcoming projects, Rajkummar Rao is thrilled about the year that lies ahead of him.
I’m very very excited about Made In China, that would be my next release. That would be my next, I’m really excited about it. I think you guys would love that film. Then there is Turram Khan with Hansal sir and Love Ranjan. Then there is Anurag Basu sir’s next in which you’ll see me in a very different avatar with which I’ve tried something new and taken a risk. But I hope it’s worth it. Then Roohi Afza is going on.
Rajkummar Rao’s Judgemental Hai Kya releases on July 26.
