It’s been quite the breakthrough year for Bollywood in terms of mainstream films recognising and portraying homosexuality in a serious manner. What began with Sonam Kapoor’s stint in ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ led up to Ayushmann Khurrana’s openly gay character in the upcoming film ‘Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhaan’. Now, the first poster for another same-sex love story, ‘Sheer Qorma’, has just been released-
Starring Swara Bhasker, Shabana Azmi and Divya Dutta – Sheer Qorma is an ode to love, love that binds all! The film is said to be “heart-rending narrative of the longing for love and acceptance, felt by queer children in their parental homes that plays out through delicate story-telling, told through characters of courageous queer women of colour.”
Swara Bhasker wrote in her Instagram post, “So proud to play Faraz Arif Ansari’s gentle and shining Sitara in Sheer Qorma the film. I’m so proud to have been part of this amazing project. Not to mention the honour and dream of sharing screen space with the legendary Shabana Azmi and iconic Divya Dutta.”
“There are very few films from the LGBTQIA+ spectrum that talk about women as protagonists,” director Faraz had said earlier about the subject of the film. He had posted about Swara’s character in the film, saying that she was a ‘warrior’ of ‘love and light’.
Sheer Qorma also stars actresses Shabana Azmi and Surekha Sikri. Sikri had just won the National Award for best actress for her role in the film Badhaai Ho. Shabana Azmi is also known for her portrayal of a female lover in Fire, which was a film based on two women who are abandoned by their husband and find love in one another. Sheer Qorma‘s release date is yet to be announced.
