Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma Look SO Different In Sui Dhaga

Yash Raj Films’ upcoming entertainer Sui Dhaga was caught in a flurry of memes and took the internet by storm. It is meanwhile being lauded for nailing the simplicity and authenticity of Varun Dhawan as Mauji and Anushka Sharma as Mamta. A film about finding love and respect through self-reliance, Varun Dhawan is paired opposite Anushka for the first time. Since the release of Sui Dhaga’s trailer, the styling and appearance of both the stars have been doing the rounds nationwide.

The credit score goes to the resource of Varun’s inspiration; Noor, the in-house tailor who even trained the actor for the movie. Varun, who plays the role of an innocent local tailor in the film, took three months of training for playing the ‘real masterji’. Darshan Jalan, the costume designer says, “Mauji is from the lower middle class income strata. He is simple person who works in the city as a help/peon in a sewing machine store. Regular people on the streets became an inspiration for us”. From a styling point of view, Darshan further said that Varun’s glance has the facets of a tailor who could offer practical solutions to common problems. For instance, zipper on the side of the pants could reduce the size of the flare and prevent it from getting caught while styling. “These intricate details I believe makes audience see something new and adds to the authenticity of the character from a small town in India’, adds Darshan.

Calling Noor an integral part of Sui Dhaga, Varun reveals that the former was his trainer for 3 months. “He laid the foundation stone to me becoming Mauji. I’m indebted to him for teaching me the art of Sui Dhaga and making me a believable tailor on screen. I’m happy that my look has been well received and the credit goes to Darshan and obviously my teacher Noor, who has again left his mark over my character,” says Varun.

Meanwhile, the powerhouse performer, Anushka Sharma has gone completely de-glam and isn’t wearing any make-up in her role as Mamta, a simple, down to earth, sincere yet ambitious embroiderer from a small Indian town. Darshan Jalan reveals that the simple look actually made things challenging as there was no room for error and thus he studied rural housewives to finalise Mamta’s look. “The character is that of a housewife living on a lower middle class income in city outskirts! It was clear from the get go that Anushka would wear synthetic saree(s) primarily because they are cheap but most importantly it washes easily and dries quickly.” says Darshan.

Darshan recalls vivid memories of a lady coming to his house on Saturdays to collect donation for local temple. “She always wore synthetic saree in same colour tones, always covered her head, which is not only a tradition but a shield from heat and cold! Memories like these become reference points!” adds Darshan.

Anushka Sharma credited Darshan and her maker up artist Clover Wootton for making Mamta raw, real and relatable. She says, “I love Mamta’s look! From the pallu over my head, to the dhaaga that I wear around my neck to the decision to go completely without make-up, all these have created this character. The best part was that it took flat 20 minutes to get into Mamta’s look. Mamta will always be a very, very special role in my filmography.”

Sui Dhaaga brings together National Award winning producer-director combo of Maneesh Sharma and Sharat Katariya after their blockbuster “Dum Laga Ke Haisha”. The film is a special salute to the inherent entrepreneurial spirit that the youth of India and our local artisans have. It is set to release on September 28 this year, just before Gandhi Jayanti.
