The live-action version of Disney’s Mulan is in the midst of a controversy, one that has taken social media by storm. In the recent events of massive anti-government protests in Hong Kong, the actress who plays the titular role of the fierce warrior, Liu Yifei has found herself on the wrong side of her fans. Taking to a Chinese social-media website, Yifei came out in support for the Hong Kong police. Her post said “I support the Hong Kong police. You can all attack me now. What a shame for Hong Kong“.
This wasn’t well-received by Netizens as they believe that the police was abjectly harsh on the peaceful demonstrators and used excessive force on them.
Soon after her statement #BoycottMulan started trending – with altering her image from the above mentioned poster evoking a strong stance on how the police has reacted to the protestors-, calling out for people to distance themselves from the movie and from Yifei. The movie is slated for a March 27, 2020 release, and as of now due to lack of any official statement, the future of Mulan is casting a looming question.
