Watch: The Trailer Of ‘Hala’ Shows Us A Muslim Teenager Coming Of Age In America

AppleTV+ has released the trailer of Minhal Baig’s debut feature- Hala, which tells the coming-of-age story of a Pakistani American teenager. Based on a short film Baig made in 2016, Hala centers on the titular character, an only child to Pakistani immigrants to America. With high school graduation looming, Hala is bursting with sexual desire. When she meets Jesse, a classmate who shares her love for poetry and skateboarding, their romance is complicated by her Muslim faith and a father who is prepared to arrange her marriage according to their family’s cultural tradition.

Hala had its world premiere at Sundance earlier this year and received a spirited reception at a packed theatre and it was also in the official selection at Toronto International Film Festival.  Hala is played by Australian actress Geraldine Viswanathan and the film also stars Jack Kilmer, Gabriel Luna, Anna Chlumsky, Azad Khan and Purbi Joshi.  Jada Pinkett Smith is serving as the executive director of the movie.

Hala though will get a limited theatrical release starting November 22 before debuting for streaming on Apple TV+ on Dec. 6. Watch the first trailer below:
