Franchises are a popular thing now; almost half of all box-office breaking movies are the biggest franchises ever. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Marvel is home to Hollywood’s largest franchises. Further, the Disney-owned studio has no intentions of stopping as Hollywood’s schedule looks heavy with just Marvel properties, besides other franchise like ‘Star Wars’, ‘Star Trek’, ‘James Bond’ and so on.
Hollywood is so franchise-friendly that Hustlers star Jennifer Lopez claimed it’s getting increasingly difficult to get a movie made that isn’t a comic book adaptation or part of some massive-billion dollar franchise. During an interview while promoting Hustlers at the Toronto International Film Festival the actor said, “First of all, it’s hard to make a movie, period. It has to be a Marvel comic or some crazy franchise thing but the smaller movies about humanity and people and life and struggles, you don’t get that as much unless you do that for nothing and there’s no budget”.
The initial question that prompted Lopez’s response asked the star if she thought it was still tough making female-led movies in 2019. “We couldn’t make this movie that way,” the actor continued. “On top of the movies themselves, then when you have women characters at the front of it, it’s a whole another battle. It’s a whole new layer and it’s hard to get them made.” Critics are already raving over Jennifer Lopez’s turn as the powerful stripper at the center of a scam ring in Hustlers, a performance that launched her into the awards race following the premiere at Toronto International Film Festival. Hustlers is set to hit theaters September 12th.
