The upcoming film by Fernando Meirelles follows the story of one of the most dramatic transitions of power in the Vatican between two very different men: Pope Benedict XVI, played by Hopkins and Pope Francis, played by Pryce. The Two Popes, inspired by true events, begins with Cardinal Bergoglio, who later becomes Pope Francis, seeking out Pope Benedict to ask his permission to retire after becoming frustrated with the direction of the church. Behind Vatican walls, a struggle commences between tradition and progress, guilt and forgiveness, as these two men must confront their past to usher in a bright future for a billion followers around the world. Besides Hopkins and Pryce, the film also stars Juan Minujin, Sidney Cole, Thomas D. Williams, and Federico Torre.
Penned by Anthony McCarten, The Two Popes will release on Netflix on December 20.
