This Film On Menstruation Is India’s Only Connection To Oscars 2019

Bollywood releases about 2000 films annually, almost half the total films made around the globe. It’s strange to realize that only a few lucky names have received the honour since 1983…

Rakya’s directorial debut, MADARAN qualified for the 89th Academy Awards in 2016. This year Iranian-American filmmaker Rakya Zehtabchi’s documentary Period. End of Sentence. has made the cut!

The film revolves around menstruation related myths, illogical superstitions that still exist in our country. The film features the real-life ‘Pad Man’, Arunachalam Muruganathan.

Sparing no effort to improve feminine hygiene, a machine that creates low-cost biodegradable sanitary pads is installed in a rural village in Northern India. Using the machine, a group of local women is employed to produce and sell pads, offering them newfound independence all while uprooting the deeply rooted stigma around menstruation for all.
