He is back! He still has the need for speed! Have the years tamed him?! Well seems not.
Yes, Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is back. But, he is no longer the impulsive devil-may-care Flight Lieutenant up for any challenge, he is now an instructor at the very same Top Gun, the Navy’s Fighter Weapon School.
The trailer of the film, launched at the San Diego Comic Con, is a direct sequel to the 1986 hit Top Gun that had shot Cruise to instant fame and established him as a Hollywood star. Cruise took to his social media account posting a picture, which shows his back in the iconic bomber jacket announcing Top Gun: Maverick.
The film will have Cruise teaching the son of his late partner and best friend, Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw, who dies in a crash in the last film. As young Bradshaw follows his father’s footsteps, the trailer also shows Cruise cruising on his bike across barren landscapes on a mission of sorts. Though the actor is insistent on performing his own stunts, he was, however, denied permission to fly any of the fighter jets, since the US armed forces don’t allow civilans to fly military hardware.
The trailer does not reveal much of the plot, but there are plenty of call backs from the first movie and also brings back Val Kilmer who played Ice Man, Maverick’s arch rival in the previous film.
Top Gun 2 also stars Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris and is directed by Joseph Kosinski. The film will hit screens in 2020, so in the meantime may be one can just go back to the original and check out the boys and their need for speed as they fly across the danger zone!
