Narendra Kumar is among the handful Indian designers who focus on athleisure, the intellectual designer started his career as a fashion designer for ‘Ensemble’ – India’s first multi-designer boutique that was co-founded by Tarun Tahiliani. ‘Nari’ as he is fondly called, was also the fashion founding editor of ELLE India when the magazine had launched. Sharp tailoring on modern silhouettes, simple and chic, he ensures his garments reflect an Indian touch. When it comes to menswear, Nari keeps it practical. He sketches his own designs and stays involved at every aspect of creation.
Designer Narendra Kumar is also the Creative Director with Amazon Fashion. It’s an exciting role, he feels. To be able to merge his creative vision with eCommerce as it allows him to learn about the evolving choices of consumers on day to day basis.

What’s your personal style statement?
My style has evolved over the years and I love experimenting with ongoing trends. This being the age of comfort, my style is also dictated by it. Since I travel a lot, I opt for a comfortable pair of sneakers and joggers paired with a knitted shirt layered with a bomber jacket or a blazer, depending on the occasion.
This look has evolved as my signature style and to sum it up, my style is Athleisure.
How has fashion evolved over the years? And what is the future of the fashion industry in terms of design?
The Indian fashion scene has been a lot more conventional for a lot longer. The Fashion industry in India has picked up the pace and over the last decade, it has become an integral part of our lifestyle. It is one of the fastest growing segments in India. Fashion, today is not only restricted to the larger metros, but has also captured the imagination of consumers in remote cities & towns.
Today, the fashion industry has talented designers who are confident to create something new and are able to experiment with global styles, bearing in mind the local ethnicities. The future is driven by the younger generation who are proud and self-aware of the environment, trends and technologies. The design aspect has also become more versatile, we as an industry have merged Indian textiles with contemporary silhouettes to present a unique blend that befits the new age Indian customer.
The Designer Boutique on Amazon Fashion today, serves as a unique platform for younger designers who can showcase their beautiful creations alongside well-established ones.
Ecommerce has definitely played a strong role in opening up greater avenues and enhancing visibility and accessibility. Consumers are always looking for choices. Online stores give consumers the convenience and accessibility to view several brands, styles, designs across all price-points, all at one place and at the click of a button!
What are the wardrobe essentials every man must have?
Fashion for men used to be a white t-shirt and a pair of well-fitting light washed jeans. Today, with the rise of Athleisure, style is all about comfort and revolves around effortless dressing. A pair of sneakers, joggers, a blazer, linen pants and cotton chinos (in different colours) and some accessories to top it up like your backpack, a smart watch, sunglasses and you are set to take on the world.
Offbeat trends men should be accepting of
There is a new wave of distinct accessories from brooches to funky pins, men can try either of the types keeping their taste in mind. There is also a huge new wave of design when it comes to accessories such as spectacles, shoes and bags! Men can experiment with their styles and look their fashionable best.
5 colours men should consider experimenting with
Coral definitely since Living Coral is the colour of the season. The others being ochre, peach and electric blue along with neon. These can be experimented in fun and funky ways, either add a pair of sunglasses or opt for sneakers in neon shades. Also try ditching your black and blue blazer and replace it with either a funky ochre or a mustard hue.
Which actor is your muse? An actor you would love to collaborate with?
Unfortunately, there are very few actors that I could consider to be my muse when it comes to style. There are very few among the industry who push the boundaries when it comes to fashion. Though, I must say Ranveer Singh’s fashion choices know no bounds and no limits which is a game changer! I have also seen a few new age cricketers experiment with their looks.
One fashion trend you absolutely refuse to understand
The bow tie! I don’t know why we wear it. It appears to be restrictive and formal.
