For anyone, whether they have a proclivity towards fashion or not, the idea of London gives a very typical idea-sartorially. Tweed, houndstooth, elbow patches, pinstripes, bellowing skirts, pointed heels -fashion in London is prim and it’s proper. It’s androgynous and it’s minimal. After all it is home to Burberry’s equestrian cuts, to Roksanda Ilincic’s sublime layers, Alice Temperley’s floral patterns. Even the athleisure here is doused in designs far removed from the casual bits of it. So does it cater to the sensibilities of Bollywood who are a lot about embellishments and opulence? Turns out, yes. And we have beautiful juxtaposition for that very purpose!
1. Markus Lupfer
Floral and dainty, Anushka Sharma keeps reinventing the style she chooses to carry off. The minute floral patterns on a light colour are perfectly English for a quintessential garden party with your best friends!
2. House of Holland
Athleisure and pinstripes is that perfect combination when you want to be comfortable in your workout wear but not come across as a lazy dresser. We mean-who doesn’t want drawstrings to be mainstream just as yet? Who else can make this a trend than the very effortlessly hot Priyanka Chopra?!
3. Temperley London
Classic cuts, minimal lace, and some beautiful soft pink. Diana Penty boasts of that innate innocence that is required to carry off an outfit this feminine and soft.
4. Mary Katrantzou
We truly believe that Sonam Kapoor’s fashion aesthetic is so powerful and so brilliant that she can truly carry off any outfit regardless of shape, colour, silhouette. Anti-fit as a concept gained immense popularity in India significantly because of Kapoor’s sense of style, and hence who else can carry off essentially a quiltisised (we made a word!) outfit with aplomb just like she could carry of red and white stripes without looking like a candycane!
5. Jenny Packham
Jenny Packham’s a girly girl’s designer. She is of course a favourite of Kate Middleton, however the femininity her designs exude don’t necessarily need you to be a royal. Shimmery, translucent, and ephemeral – Packham’s designs can work very well on someone like Kiara Advani who loves her frothy skirts, and her metallic hues!
6. Victoria Beckham
Completing 10 years in fashion, Victoria Beckham showcased her first show at the London Fashion Week with the most architecturally soothing cuts that boasted of elegance and businesslike sophistication. Who else but Deepika Padukone to slay that style with her statuesque figure and gorgeous locks that can literally carry off elegance, elegantly?!
7. Roland Mouret
Metallic hues with some androgyny pumped in, these two looks are literally mirror images of each other conceptually. Plus Shraddha Kapoor boasts of that fierce attitude that is needed to ace this feisty look!
Delpozo is a brand meant for femininity that doesn’t ascribe to straight up girliness. It’s not too overt, not too in your face, not too twee, but it showcases elements of female aesthetic in an understated and architectural way. Samantha Ruth Prabhu is your surprise factor when it comes to dressing in a feminine way. Her silhouettes are flirty, the colours vibrant, but there is not an ounce of forced cuteness involved.
9. Peter Pilotto
New age cocktail wear is shiny, it is shimmery, it looks like liquid colour cascading through your body! No one better than the newcomer Janhvi Kapoor, who is on everyone’s mind in Bollywood!
10. Roksanda Ilincic
We mean, who else?! Katrina Kaif is blessed with an absolutely breathtaking face which is beautiful but without necessary doses of vulnerability. There is fierceness on her face which translates into making any feminine outfit she wears being slightly more than just an outfit. Roksanda’s Brit-cuts that meet with ingenuous layering is something Kaif would definitely be able to carry off super well!
Erdem is known for dreamlike textures, unbridled femininity, beautiful prints, and fantastical silhouettes. Their way of working with pastel shades and light hues is as sublime as fierce their use of darkened shades. Erdem is the quintessential designer for those who need to be contemporary and vintage at the same time. Kangana Ranaut matches that quite well, she is fierce and soft at the very same time. Her sartorial sense brings this point home even more potently as she steps out in a saree with brogues, in a handloom salwar kameez paired with a trench coat! Don’t you agree?!
12. Christopher Kane
Edgy, modern, art-deco, sexy – we use these adjectives to describe both Kareena Kapoor Khan and Christopher Kane’s fashion sensibilities. A gorgeous combination of delicious fabrics, statement appliques, and bold colours – the avant garde fashionista is all about this style!
13. Emilia Wickstead
Emilia Wickstead designs for ladies with a flirty and adventurous side who love taking on experimental quirks. Alia Bhatt literally fits that bill. A sequinned dress in metallic texture, or a monochrome hue in an extremely vibrant colour – this is for an actress who is all about wild innocence!
Ricardo Tisci’s debut for Burberry involved the age-old aesthetic of the fashion house with elements of some of Tisci’s dramatic overtures. What we got was how someone with elegance would dress up for a throw-down! Radhika Apte seemed to suit that brief to the T. Right from the official cuts, to the ladylike silhouette, to the stark contrasting colours, to embellishments, to accessorised lapels -the looks at Burberry’s SS19 were a mix of regimen with some classic sophistication!
