The past decade saw a plenty of interesting and weird stuff happening. From fashion and food to travel and tech, the last 10 years were mysterious, fascinating and illuminating. So, before the New Year kicks in, let’s take a look back and relive some of the most bizarre moments we all witnessed.
1. Lady Gaga wore a meat dress, 2010
Remember the time when Lady Gaga graced the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards in a dress made entirely of raw beef. Yes, the very dress in which she accepted the award of Video of the Year for ‘Bad Romance’. Well, the iconic dress lives in our memories forever and it even earned a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
2. People had sex while skydiving, 2011
This is probably the most bizarre and interesting in the history of violations; Alex Torres, pornformer who also goes by the name of Voodoo, skydived while having sex with Hope Howell, a receptionist at the Skydive Taft where he worked as a skydiving instructor. They met up with a pilot to film the video early in the morning, when no one could see the event going down live.
3. People thought the world would end, 2012
Yup, we still feel silly for thinking December 21, 2012 would be the end of the world. After all, the Mayan calendar apparently said it would be. But then the date came and went with no catastrophic event or gigantic apocalypse happening, and no matter how stupid we felt, most of us had also let out huge sigh of reliefs.
4. An airplane disappeared, 2014
The world witnessed one of the biggest aviation mysteries in history when a Malaysia Airlines jet, with 239 passengers and crew onboard, disappeared without a trace in 2014. The missing plane triggered one of the biggest multinational search missions and prompted several conspiracy theories, including the plane was intentionally crashed by the pilot, North Korea took the plane, it was shot down, a life insurance scam, an alien abduction and many more. What actually happened to flight MH370 still remains a mystery.
5. Russia sent geckos to space to have sex, 2014
And the poor geckos never came back! In 2014, Russia, curious to see how sexual reproduction works when species are off Earth, sent four female geckos and one male gecko into space. But then the Russians lost contact with the geckos, which caused British comedian John Oliver to lead a passionate campaign to bring the ‘sex geckos’ home. They were found later but the geckos died upon reentering the atmosphere, so nobody really don’t know yet what intergalactic sex is like.
6. JFK spent $65M on a terminal you can’t even use, 2016
You can only use if you’re an animal. Yes, that’s right! New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport opened a $65 million extravagant terminal in 2016. Dubbed The Ark, the 178,000-square-foot animal haven is exclusively for pampered pets. The terminal has flat screen TVs, a full-service salon, splash pools, and a 20,000-square-foot ultra-luxe resort and lounge.
7. Girl with Balloon painting destructed, 2018
Remember that painting of the ‘Girl with Balloon’ that was shredded in perfect measurements and angles. Well, it was nothing but a clever art stunt where the painting was run through a shredder after it closed its bid at $1.4 million at an auction in London. Painted by British graffiti artist Banksy the shredded work has been renamed ‘Love is in the Bin’ and has been put up for display in a museum in Germany.
8. We saw a black hole for the first time, 2019
This year, the world got the first glimpse of the weirdest and most mysterious spectacle in the universe- the black hole. Astronomers were able to capture the first-ever image of a black hole for people to see on April 10, and it was a huge moment in the history of space study.
9. An egg broke Kylie Jenner’s record on Instagram, 2019
Remember, when in January this year, all of us liked an egg image to dethrone Instagram Queen Kylie Jenner. Yes, World_record_egg posted a picture of an orange and a lightly freckled egg and challenged the world to “demolish” Kylie Jenner’s record of owing maximum likes on the photo-sharing app. And it did it!
Later, the egg even cracked under social media pressure and the broken eggshells urged others who “are struggling too” to talk about it.
10. Lastly, a decade of bizarre dance moves
Nothing wins over the general public like a good old dance fad. And over the years, things have evolved and there have been some really bizarre, bold and slightly bonkers novelty hits that get everybody two-stepping on the dance floor. From Gangnam Style and Harlem Shake to Baby Shark and Watch Me, this decade had its fair share of popular dance crazes.
