We all know black is beautiful; but for the very first time in history America’s top beauty pageants have simultaneously elevated this truth. Three black women have claimed the crowns of USA’s top beauty pageants- Miss USA, Miss Teen USA and Miss America have crowned black women as their winners for the very first time.
After Cheslie Kryst was announced Miss USA last week, she completed the historic trio with Nia Franklin, winner of Miss America 2019 and the recently crowned 2019 Miss Teen USA Kaliegh Garris. And this is a big deal if you’re familiar with pageant history.
Back in time, women of colour were barred from participating in beauty pageants. The world saw black women becoming more prevalent only in the last 50 years. Vanessa Williams became the first black woman to be crowned Miss America in 1983. Carole Anne-Marie Gist became the first black Miss USA winner in 1990 and the follow year Janel Bishop was crowned Miss Teen USA, making her the first black win the title.
