The comic book scene in India has just started to pick up steam. In the past 10 years, we’ve seen the scene grow from just a handful of dedicated creators and enthusiasts to encompassing the entire nation. Ask anyone on the street who Ironman is and they’ll shoot out the answer so quick, it’ll make your head spin. To say that comic books have become a part of mainstream consciousness is an understatement. And, we seriously have Comic Con to thank for that.
From its humble beginnings in Dilli Haat to the juggernaut it is today, Comic Con has grown by leaps and bounds. We should also give credit where credit is due as Marvel Studios have almost single-handedly changed the face of superhero films globally. But, for us local geeks and nerds, Comic Con was our one stop shop for all our pop culture addictions.
This year saw the touchdown of the Night King (Vladimir Furdik) from Game of Thrones as well as comic book luminaries such as John Layman, Declan Shavley and Peter Nguyen. It was a treat for Indian fans as they got to interact with true professionals and pick their brains when it came to comics and nerd culture. Given that we have a burgeoning scene in our country, this kind of interaction only fosters growth. We can’t wait to see what the next generation of comic book artists and writers from India has in store for us.
This year, the NSIC grounds were where the massive event took place and from what we could see, there was no other place that could contain the madness that was Comic Con 2018. The food court was massive and there were a ton of stores that sold everything from actual comic books, action figures and all sorts of nerdy nick-knacks. We even caught a glimpse of the latest Aquaman trailer and a full mock-up of Jason Momoa in his full regal garb. Plus, there was an awesome Arthur Curry cosplayer who truly looked like the real thing. Minus the muscles, of course.
For comic book enthusiasts and people who just want to be a part of something cool and awesome, Comic Con is the place for you. And, even though the event concluded on the 9th of December, there is always next year.
Let us know what you thought of this year’s Comic Con and what you’d like to see from the organizers next year.
