2010 – the year when the term ‘OTT’ only meant ‘over-the-top’, when the first ever ‘Housefull’ and ‘Dabangg’ had released, when Ranveer Singh ‘ainvayi ainvayi’ in his first film stole our hearts, when acting sensations like Alia Bhatt and Ayushmann Khurrana were yet to make their debut. Ten years later, we can’t imagine our life without all our favourite movies at the touch of a button! We now also have ‘Housefull 4’ and ‘Dabangg 3’ releasing in theatres. And as even this decade draws to a close, we look back at some of the most iconic moments that have stayed on in our memories and shaped the industry and cinema as we know it.
1. The Rise Of Digital And The OTT Boom
The rapid rise of over-the-top content streaming gave us services that we wanted, content that we wanted, whenever we wanted, wherever we wanted. Content which could not see the light of day in terms of a traditional theatrical release, found an edge on digital streaming platforms.
2. First Mainstream Film On Homosexuality
Bollywood was testimony to many a film portraying homosexuality from a comic angle, but this decade changed that too! We saw a mainstream film such as Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga with Sonam Kapoor as the lead actress, whose character was attracted to women and rejected Rajkummar Rao’s advances because of the same.
3. Women Centric Films And Roles On Top
Long gone are the days when producers and directors only bankrolled films with male protagonists! There has been a wave of great stories that overtook Bollywood, and what’s great is the fact that women are central to the plots to quite a number of them.
4. Characters Preceding Actors
The decade of 2010 to 2019 has seen a breakdown of the ‘star-like’ aura that precedes every actor. There has been a shift of perspective of actors also, who are now driven by good scripts and good content as the primary reasons for doing a film.
5. Story-Writers Were Given Their Due Credit
Simple stories, with effective storytelling and direction, and their heart in the right place have won accolades all through this decade – thus causing another major shift towards content driven cinema. The rise of OTT has also contributed majorly to this wave of excellent content pervading over everything else.
6. Priyanka Chopra – The Global Ambassador
The decade began with Priyanka Chopra’s blink-and-miss film with Uday Chopra, Pyaar Impossible, and at the end of this decade she is literally everywhere! From Alex Parrish in Quantico, to multiple other Hollywood outings, Priyanka Chopra established herself as a global phenomenon leaving no doubts about her abilities.
7. 50 Years Of Amitabh Bachchan
Meanwhile, superstar Amitabh Bachchan completed a whopping 50 years in Indian cinema! The actor celebrated his golden jubilee and won the Dada Saheb Phalke award for his contributions to the industry. He continues to work, even at the age of 77.
The biggest of the big Bollywood stars did not shy away from speaking up about their encounters with sexual harassment. This led to a full-blown #MeToo campaign gaining momentum, and more and more women opening up for the cause.
9. The 300-Cr Benchmark
Films went on to do brisk business at the box-office, with many blockbusters earning as much as Rs 300 crores! Yes, it was in this decade that Rs 300 crores became the new benchmark for a film doing well.
10. 100 Years Of Bollywood
And lastly, our very own Indian film industry completed 100 years of existence! We laughed, we cried, we got angry, all thanks to the power of cinema. What a tremendous decade it’s been, right?
