Family Food Chronicles: The Summer Favourite Aam Ki Dal

Oh the season of mangoes! I feel the only thing keeping our spirits high amid this national lockdown and self isolation, is nature’s bounty – whether it is the clean air, or fresh fruits and veggies! We are lucky enough to have produce easily available to us, and it makes us realise how we take the simplest of things for granted, and also makes us realise of our privilege. It’s these little things that make one realise how the world needs reality checks every now and then! It also gives us an opportunity, which is to create. Like this aam ki dal!

Tangy, sweet, and nutritious – this dal is the perfect summer recipe. No longer is aamras the only family favourite mango indulgence! 

Ingredients

1 KATORI – Chana Dal

1 KATORI – Urad Dal

Curry Patta

1 ½ TSP – Haldi

1 ½ TSP – Lal Mirch Powder

Namak to Taste

½ KATORI – Lehsun

2 TSP – Panch Phoron

Aam

Method

Soak the dal for one hour. Pressure cook it with water, salt, haldi, 2 to 3 green chillies, aam. Give 2 whistles. For the chaunk, take 1 tablespoon tel, and 1 tablespoon ghee, add panch phoron, lehsun, and kadhi patta. Once the lehsun becomes slightly brown, add 1 teaspoon jeera powder and 1 teaspoon garam masala. Finally add the dal, and put lal mirch powder so the overall colour doesn’t go black. You can also add 1 teaspoon sugar.
