Winters are all about comfort food; it’s also a time of cosy evenings with family. These are times when we eat to find a feeling beyond fullness. And when breezy evenings and treats come together, we get food platters with a nostalgic and sentimental value. My family, like yours, also craves for warm, satisfying meals when the cool kicks in. They like to indulge in delicacies with a measure of joy, a momentary salve for spirits, a feeling of goodness where something hard has set in. Eating feel-good food, after all, actually makes you feel good.

So during such times, I set up the table with hearty meals and a little taste of home; dishes that remind me of all the winter times I spent at my grandparents’ home. On the menu today is chicken grilled sandwich, sweet corn soup and sweet potatoes. It’s true that the classic combination of soups and sandwiches never get old, and when you add some sweet potatoes to this combo, what you get are simple timeless classics that satisfy tummies for generations.  There is nothing like a bowl of hot soup on a chilly winter day and the mild flavours of sweet corn just make it so easy to love it. Pair the flavoursome soup with some baked sweet potatoes and it’s simply warmth, hugging you from inside. Wrap up your appetizing meal with a no-fuss sandwich stacked with flavoursome chicken, and there you have the perfect ending to a cosy evening. Not just satisfying, the dishes also keep the health quotient in check; baked foods, after all, are healthier and more nutritious. Hence, there’s no doubt why chicken grilled sandwich, sweet corn soup and sweet potatoes always found a place on my family’s plate, be it at my childhood home or now in my married home.

Here is the recipe for grilled chicken:

Chicken -250gm boneless

Black pepper – 1/2 tsp

Salt  to taste

Mayonnaise-2 1/2 tsp

Mustard sauce – 1/2 tsp


Place chicken in a pot, add water and salt, and boil. Once boiled, debone the chicken pieces.

Add black pepper, mayonnaise, mustard sauce and salt (to taste) to the deboned chicken and mix well.

Spread the chicken mix on sandwich bread or any other bread and grill.

Here’s the recipe for sweet corn soup:

Chicken -200gm boneless

Fresh corn -2 pieces

Salt to taste

Black pepper-1/2 tsp



Boil small chicken pieces and smashed corn in double quantity of water. Add salt and pepper to the water.

When chicken is almost boiled, add beaten eggs.

Garnish with spring onions.

Here’s the recipe for sweet potatoes:

Sweet potatoes -4

Salt to taste

Paprika powder -1 tsp

Garlic powder -1 tsp

Onion powder-1 tsp

Olive oil -2 tsp


Boil the sweet potatoes and then cut them into pieces.

Add paprika powder, garlic powder, onion powder, olive oil and salt to the boiled potatoes and mix well.

Put the potato mix on the baking tray lined with butter paper and bake for 15-20 min at 200 degree centigrade.
