30 Days Of Halloween: Why ‘It Follows’ Is More Than Cheap Thrills

“It could look like someone you know or it could be a stranger in a crowd. Whatever helps it get close to you.”

We’ve all seen some gory-centric stomach-turners. We’ve seen psychopaths and we’ve also seen demons, both leaving us without a fright at times, but we haven’t quite seen anything like ‘It follows’.

Much like the worst hookup hangover you’ve had, still nothing like it. This horror flick will have you saying “no thanks” to every opportunity to go to bed with someone. Because the evil spirit here is much like a STD. Remember when you were a kid and thought you stand the chances of getting pregnant if you shared an ice cream with a boy? Or simply brought to mind anything this bizarre. That was, at one level, a rarefied quality of ignorance. To believe in the irrational. ‘It Follows’ unearths your school-age fears as it continues to assert that everyday reality is a human construct. The HORROR! So here’s what’s possible in the plot:

The suburban protagonists are not being hunted, neither are they able to see dead people by birthright, rather the film is about illogical actions that have long-lasting consequences. Sex is scary. Even if you think you know everything you need to know about sex, take a few minutes and read on.

Jay (Maika Monroe) is dating Hugh (Jake Weary.) Following soms sexy time in Hugh’s car, Jay wakes up tied to a chair. She is then explained that he’s given her a sexually transmitted monster. He furthers, “It” slowly walks toward its victims, sometimes taking the shape of friends. It can only be ‘exocerized’ by having sex with another person, passing “it” along to another victim.

Filmmaker David Robert Mitchell’s sophomore attempt, the narrative which he says he summoned from a childhood dream, creates the perfect recipe with realistic paranoia and the fear of the unknown. ‘It follows’ sneaks up on you without you realising. Even the film’s style and rhythm is crafted to send a chill down your spine. Feeding the watchers’ appetite for nudity and gore, the scare in It Follows is not just physical but existential, this film will make your mind spaz uncontrollably.
