Roger Federer Gets His Own Coin And Netizens Lose Their Mind!

Roger Federer has too many feathers in his hat for his opponents to handle; add the Swiss franc to the list. For the first time in its history, the Swissmint has dedicated a commemorative coin to a living person- 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer. The “heads” side of the coin shows Federer playing a one-handed backhand.

In a statement, the Switzerland government said Federer is the best-known personality from the country both on and off the court and that the coins will be issued on January 23, 2020. Federer took to social media to thank Swissmint and also joked saying, “Fed’s or tail?”.

Federer fanatics were so keen to get their hands on a shiny piece of history that the sheer weight of demand for coins proved too much to handle for Swissmint’s online shop, which buckled under the pressure. Explosive demand for the commemorative Federer coin threw the Mint’s website into turmoil, leaving many fans unable to buy.

Swissmint CEO Marius Haldimann said, “We had 2.5 million clicks. It was too much for the shop to handle. When Roger posted a link on his social media channels the website immediately had problems due to all the traffic. Some fans could access the shop but could not finish the order. Others could not get onto the website”.

Fifteen thousand of the 35,000 coins offered up in a pre-sale window have been claimed and the rest should fly off the virtual shelves when the website recovers from its Federer-induced crash. An additional 40,000 will be released in May, when a 50-franc gold coin will also be released by the Swissmint.
