A privilege, a duty and a right – voting is the essence of democracy. With the General Elections upon us, social media firm Snapchat is taking things on their hands to get more people to cast their votes. Not only this, it is also guiding people to resources of the Election Commission of India.
Indian Snapchatters received a Snap from Team Snapchat on March 28th which incorporated filters reminding them to check their online voter roll ahead of the deadline. Further, a ‘Team Snapchat’ Snap will also be sent to all its users today reminding them to look when their constituency is voting along with a Snap in each individual state. The Snap includes a link to the polling location information hosted on the ECI’s portal.
Snapchat is really into urging people to vote as they also designed a range of creative tools including filters, stickers, Bitmoji, lenses and Snap Maps integration especially for the election. You can use lenses and filters toe express yourself on issues concerning the elections and share them with your friends. And Snap Map will give you a new way to check your online voter roll and also look up when your state constituency is voting. The app will have these tools available till late May when the Lok Sabha elections get over.
The social media platform has also collaborated with Young Leaders for Active Citizenship (YLAC) to host a geo-filter competition with the aim to encourage voter engagement and expression in the states of Mumbai and Delhi. Snapchat’s remarkable step will indeed played an influential role in the outcome of the general election.
