Sunil Kumar Wins India’s 87 Kg Title, Ends India’s 27-Year Wait

Wrestler Sunil Kumar has bagged a Gold medal in the Greco-Roman (GR 87 KG) category thereby putting an end to India’s 27-year wait. In the 2019 championship, Sunil Kumar had won a silver medal.

Sunil Kumar defeated Azat Salidinov of Kyrgyzstan in the 87-kg category at the KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium; a first for India at the summit in this category for the first time after 1993. pappu Yadav was the last Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to win a gold at the Asian Championships in the 48 kg title in 1993.

Kiren Rijiju, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports congratulated Kumar in a tweet , “India was doing much better in free style wrestling but now our famous wrestler #SunilKumar has created history by winning the first gold medal in 27 years in the Greco Roman 87kg category at the #AsianWrestlingChampionships.”

Arjun Halakurki (55kg) won a bronze by defeating Donghyeok Won of Korea 7-4 but later lost to Iran’s Pouya Mohammad Naserpour. India’s third medal hope Mehar Singh (130kg), however, narrowly lost his bronze medal against Roman Kim of Kyrgyzstan by 2-3.
