In a dramatic turns of events, Britain’s first gay dads’ relationship has come to an end after 32 years. This came as one of them, Millionaire Barrie Drewitt-Barlow fell “head over heels” for Scott Hutchinson who previously dated his 19-year-old daughter Saffron. And quite incredibly, both Saffron and Barrie’s husband Tony, who he is set to divorce, have given the couple their blessing.
Barrie and Tony were dubbed Britain’s first gay fathers in 1999 when a surrogate gave birth to their twins, Saffron and Aspen. And now, Barrie is in love with 19-year-old Saffron’s ex and remarkably, the three men live happily under one roof, in their £6 million, ten-bedroom mansion in the United States. Tony is referred to as Dad, Barrie is Daddy and Scott is stepdad. The family call the set up a “very 21st-century family set-up” after Barrie and Scott went public with their intention to marry after dating for nine months.
50-year-old Barrie said he felt “stupid” for fancying someone half his age, but said he knew it was “right”. He was quoted saying, “I’ve fallen in love with Scott and he has done the same. I feel stupid at my age to have these feelings about someone other than Tony who is half my age. But when you know something is right, it’s right. We have not made definite plans but I would like to marry Scott. I’m not having a midlife crisis. This is the real deal”. Barrie further acknowledged that not everyone will “get it”, but insists that his family situation is more stable than many other families. He added that “Dad’s got a new fella and we are one bigger happy family instead”.
Barrie is CEO of the British Surrogacy Centre of America which he launched in 2000 and offers surrogacy services in multiple countries. After Saffron and her twin brother Aspen, both of whom will turn 20 next month, Tony and Barrie had another three children- Orlando, Jasper and Dallas.
