“The world will have to learn to live with it”, says the World Health Organisation as it warns countries that the novel coronavirus might never go away, and might end up as an endemic, like HIV.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, May 13, Executive Director of WHO Health Emergencies Programme, Dr. Michael Ryan said –
We have a new virus entering the population, for the first time. Therefore it’s very hard to predict when we will prevail over it. I think it’s important to put it on the table that this virus may become another endemic virus in our communities. And this virus may never go away. HIV has not gone away.
Coronavirus has claimed lives of at least 2,97,000 people, worldwide, since late 2019. The disease is said to have first emerged in Wuhan, China.
WHO Chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says many countries would prefer getting out of different measures, but WHO will still recommend countries to be on high alert.
