Delhi Court: Nirbhaya Case Accused To Be Hanged On March 3

Nirbhaya gang rape and murder convicts to be hanged on March 3 at 6 am, says Delhi court. Additional Session Judge Dharmender Rana issued fresh warrants against death row convicts—Mukesh Kumar Singh (32), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Kumar Sharma (26) and Akshay Kumar (31).

On December 16, 2012, a 23-year-old medical student was gang-raped and brutally assaulted in a moving bus in South Delhi. The four convicts – Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Singh and Pawan Gupta – were to be executed on February 1, 2020.

The new death warrant comes after the Tihar jail authorities informed the trial court that three of the convicts have exhausted all legal options and none of them have any appeals pending in any court at the moment.

The date of execution, first fixed for January 22, was postponed for 6 am on February 1 by a January 17 court order. The trial court later, on January 31, stayed, “till further orders” the execution of the four convicts in the case, who are lodged in Tihar Jail.
Nirbhaya was assaulted and raped by six men. One of the accused, Ram Singh, was found hanging while in police custody in March 2013, three months after committing the gruesome crime. Of the remaining five accused, who went on trial in a fast-track court, the juvenile accused, convicted of rape and murder faced three years’ imprisonment in a reform facility as per the Juvenile justice Act 2000.
