Little red buses will be seen running down the streets of Mumbai very soon, as five mini buses have been inducted to Brihan Mumbai Electric Supply (BEST) on September 16. The 21-seater mini-buses are introduced with an aim to provide last-mile connectivity to lakhs of commuters across Mumbai and its suburbs.
These mini-buses, which will be introduced in the city after registration, will be operated on diesel and are likely to ply from the Colaba bus depot. The buses have been acquired on wet lease for a period of seven years. According to reports, some of these 21-seater vehicles could ply as “conductor-less buses on a few office-going routes”.
A total of 400 AC mini-buses are to be inducted into the BEST fleet and they will arrive in batches. After the induction of the six buses, their next lot will arrive after the assembly elections in the state. According to reports, BEST plans to run these buses outside some of the busy areas as well including Prabhadevi, Lower Parel, Malad and Goregaon.
