Being a woman comes with a lot of labels and ‘crazy’ is one of them. If we’re showing emotions, we are dramatic, if we’re showing anger, we are impatient, if we are thinking, we are anxious and the list goes on. However, things took an unexpected turn at the 91st Academy Awards when Serena Williams encouraged women to ‘Dream Crazier’.
Yes, that’s right. The tennis star came together with a sportswear company to create an advertisement that celebrates ‘crazy’. “If we want to play against men, we’re nuts”, “If we dream of equal opportunity, we’re delusional”, the video asks women to embrace being ‘crazy’. The one-and-a-half minute long video features a number of barrier breaking women in sports including Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim, former WNBA star Lisa Leslie, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon- Katherine Switzer, and the US women’s national soccer team among others – And most importantly, how they all were labeled ‘crazy’ at some point or the other.
23-time Grand Slam winner, Serena Williams lent her voice to the ad’s narration and urged women to show what ‘crazy can do’ addressing the double standards that male and female athletes are often subjected to.
There could not have been a more appropriate launch than at the 91st Academy Awards, where for the first time in the history of Oscars, 15 women bagged the golden statuette.
